A solid light airs performance for Getaway’s Volvo 60 ‘Getaway-sailing.com’ was put together in the recent Bird Island race. Even though the PHS results did not reflect the way the boat was sailed, Goldy and his crew, including 3 ex-rugby players from the George Gregan Foundation worked hard in the conditions to be placed 5th over the line.
The Volvo 60’s are built for tackling the ferocious force that is the Southern Ocean and often are at their hardest to sail in light airs. The 2nd race of the CYCA Blue water point score and Tasman performance series proved to exactly that, with 2 and 3 hour periods of only 3 or 4 knots of pressure, and often swirling in all directions. The VO60 crew worked tirelessly through out the entire night conducting sail changes to duly enhance the performance of the boat.
During the final half of the race the VO60 was locked in a tight battle with the Corby 49, ‘Limit’ (Roger Hickman) and at times only a few boat lengths away from each other with friendly banter between the crews keeping all entertained in the frustrating light conditions.
The almost ‘match racing’ like duel finally ending with Limit crossing the finish line less than a boat length ahead of the VO60 and millimetres from touching the mark. This was a repeat of July’s 384nm Sydney to Gold Coast race where Limit finished 13th across the line 12 minutes ahead of Getaway-sailing.com 14th across the line.
The Getaway crew have now gained further data on sailing the boat in light conditions which Goldsworthy said will assist them further as they look to pick up the intensity of the program through summer.
