Getaway Sailing is very happy to be associated with The George Gregan foundation in the formation of sailing partnership at the recent Hamilton Island Race Week.
The “stumbo’s” or footy players worked well with the “trenches” a few professional yachties, the team utilised Getaway Sailings Volvo Ocean 60 and the combination led by the infamous Dave “Witty” Witt proved to be deadly combination.
Preparation is always important, and the VO60 recently had a new anti-fouled bottom and a new Doyle’s headsail enabling the boat to perform well, this coupled with the relentless work by the crew created a truly winning combination.
Its often debated, what the most important factor in yacht racing is, but it’s agreed that team work is one of them. The “stumboes” fully used to team work on the footy field simply transferred those winning skills to the boat.
The VO60’s are not a windward leeward boat, and also become quite sticky in light airs but the team worked extremely hard to maintain a reasonable position in the light windward leeward courses. These were more than offset by the slightly windier longer legged passage races cumulating in a competition that got tighter and tighter as the week went on and the final places were all determined by the final Molle’s Island race.
Not only did the team battle the competition, but internal crew competition necessitated several “kangaroo courts” on the mother ship. These court sessions found many of the crew guilty of various misdemeanors resulting in hefty drinking fines being imposed by the judge ‘Bill Young’ nearly disabilitating several crew repeatedly. In true Footy fashion the team was fully psyched and set to go hard at the start of every race. .
Getaway Sailing would like to thank Direct Connect for making the whole program happen and the chance to sail with such good bunch of committed blokes.
