Sydeny Hobart 2007 - Richard Davies
  Sydeny Hobart

Note the intentional spelling error! I had always wanted to do this race, ever since I was a kid sailing Mirror dinghies on the frigid seas of South Wales back in Pommy land. In the excitement of the week leading up to the race I hadn’t even noticed the spelling error on the crew shirts. Who cares, the shirt has gone into the draw marked “hallowed T shirts never to be worn in case they fade or get lost”.

I got back into competitive sailing this year and hadn’t realised how much I had missed it in the last 20 years. Is it that long, yes, from a successful sailing career as a kid and then university student, career and family took over and racing was consigned to a quick flick through the mags when in the news agent.

Arriving in Sydney, meeting Goldie and the crew at Getaway Sailing was about to change all that. Peter runs a tight ship and with the Volvo 60 and the Sydney 38 in the stable he as something to offer everyone. Typical of me it was go big or go home so started off with the wild ride on the Volvo 60 that was Sydney Southport. Awesome fun and something that needs to be a different story. Those that were there, and you know who you are, will remember it for ever. Followed this with the winter series on the Sydney 38 and then the blue water classics on the Volvo, but it was my first Hobart I was after.

We agreed to go for a 38 campaign for the race, after all, eleven boat fleet racing for 650 miles couldn’t be ignored. A great crew was assembled, Sammy and Jay in charge. Mid December disappeared in a blur of training, new sail testing, boat prep and food prep. Yes my wife Liz had kindly agreed to sort out the food.

Before we knew it race day was here. Slept well Christmas night but must admit woke with some trepidation on Boxing Day. Checked forecast, fresh nor’easter promised for at least first 48 hours followed by a weak southerly front. Kissed the wife good bye, last coffee, stowed the last pieces of kit, last photo, lines off and we were away.

Sails up, check the start line, eat a sandwich and we were on for the count down. Tried to see which boat Liz was spectating from but it was all too hectic. It is hard to describe the start. I have done dinghy championships with over 200 boats on the line, but nothing prepared me for this. It was the noise from the helicopters, the spectator fleet, you couldn’t hear yourself or the crew, the wash, the vibe, the moment, call it what you will be it is very very special. With 2 minutes to go a hole opened briefly at the favoured end of the line, and Sammy deftly flicked the boat into it. We went for speed build and had just the most awesome start allowing us to realise goal 1, top three out of harbour. Right turn at the Heads mark, kite up, Hobart here we come!
We settle into the race quickly finding the rhythm of the waves and hold our own as sunset beckons. First sched and we are doing well, in the hunt with the other 38s, no one breaking away. Wind increase to over 20 knots, competition amongst the drivers and trimmers to see who get highest numbers. 11 knots, 13 knots, big wave and a big gust, trim hard, yes 17 knots! Check with Sammy to see what wind speed the kite is rated to, “Sammy what wind speed is…..” big bang, bits of spinnaker everywhere.

Guess it was only rated to 20 knots and we just had a 28 knot gust! Get the remnants down, wind building, we hoist the chicken chute. The wind builds during the night and a 2am gybe (why is it always the dead of night), we get a big big wrap. Phil the squirrel like bow man (more squirrel than bowman) is sent up to sort it out, but in the rough seas he is almost wrapped in the kite as well. We’re down to last choice, Sammy is sent aloft with a sharp knife and another kite is consigned to Davey Jones locker, Goldie is going to go mental! We hoist the number 4 and the off watch finally go off watch. I had the sleep of the dead, and woke to find, no more number 4. It had succumbed as well, splitting pretty much straight up the sail. At this rate all we would have left to sail up the Derwent would be one of JPs tee shirts.

We are now south of Eden and Bass straight beckons. The crossing is in day light, blue skies, warm 15 knot northerly, shorts and t shirts. I know it is not supposed to be like this but dam it was a good day! We park at top end of Tasmania, multiple sail changes, course changes and clothing changes as wind decides to desert, reappear, desert, go up, go down. By the afternoon of day 3, wind finally builds into something solid from the south. It starts to get real. The wind is cold, has weight and bite. The seas are building very quickly. We dive down below and it is all kit on. As we go into night we have up to 30 knots right on the nose. It is a wet and bumpy ride into day four, but closing on Hobart fast. Hobart for late breakfast seems to be the go where upon the wind deserts us yet again. Park up close to Tassie light, sort boat out, eat what’s left of food while finally the wind fills from astern. We hoist our iso, not many running sails left, and have the most wonderful blast across Storm Bay. We nail the ride up the Derwent tracking into a building breeze the whole way. The iso gets a last gasp as we bear away and blast across the line. The finish line was pretty close to the dock and we had briefed on the need to spike the iso quickly so we could get sail down and avoid hitting the last outpost of Australia. Phil heads on to the foredeck spike in hand, “spike it Phil! Phil spike it…. Phil for f**ks sake spike it now!”. With a very really vision going through everyone but Phil’s head (Phil, what does happen in there?), of Sammy driving the boat into Constitution Dock at 14 knots, full sails up, we final manage to get the sail down, luff and miss the dock. Hope Goldie didn’t see that one, it was pretty close.

We find our spot on the dock, people are clapping, beers are thrust into our hands, Goldie strolling down the cat walk (he clearly didn’t see it) and for moments we are rock stars. We did it!

Would I do it again, you bet “sign me up baby”!

Peter and his team at Getaway Sailing did an awesome job of getting two boats and 26 people safely to Hobart. Not only that, we raced hard, learnt tons and had a great time. Fantastic job guys!

For Sammy: keep on rockin, you did a great job.
For Jay: military breeds leaders, no exception.
For Paul: the man that can fix anything and we still hold that speed record!
For JP: huge experience, happy you quit the gaspers.
For Ash: stalwart of the boat…GRIND!!
For Simon: what a great guy.
For Daniel: happiest guy on the boat. Will miss his 2am “what’s new today”.
For Phil: it was emotional
For Wes: don’t worry the puking will stop…some time...

The names have all been changed to protect the innocent, except the above who are all not so innocent!

Freehills Private Charter
Some of the team were fortunate enough to secure a ride home on “Djuice Dragons” Getaway-Sailing.com – a Volvo 60 Ocean racing yacht. The yacht competed in the 2001/2002 round the world race. The trip back was beautiful and many of us had the opportunity to steer at the helm, whilst others took the opportunity to toil away at the grinders. The highlight for us was the return through the Sydney Harbour heads just in time to see the sunset !!

Freehills Team - Feb 2007

Harold Voglreiter - Austria
Harold has completed many of our courses including Private Radio, Sea Survival and Marine First Aid. He has also trained with us on Sydney Harbour in the Monday Night Summer series, JP Morgan One Design Regatta and recently returned from Hobart on the Volvo 60. He's a good mate and a pleasure to sail with. Thanks for all your support H!

Barry Lau, Comp Crew Graduate, 2004
What is a mainsail, where is the sheet, who is helming, how do you tie a bowline?? You may well ask these questions as you navigate through your sailing course.I dived straight into it and found the Getaway-Sailing team professional, knowledgeable and friendly in teaching an absolute novice how to sail. There is a good balance of theory and practical which gives you a good understanding of the essential basics in becoming a competent and confident crew member. The course was challenging with a lot of information to absorb but the guys at Getaway makes it fun and enjoyable. We had a great couple of days out on the harbour which really reinforced the theory sessions.I would recommend the courses and sailing activities with Andrew and his crew any day.

Gerard McCord - Alexandria, Sydney
We call this guy the "poster boy". Why? well it's cause he is Getaway's model student of sailing. Always seen in Getaway gear, this man don't stop. He started with us in the winter of 2002 sailing Merit, the VO60 from Hammo to Sydney and from that moment on, he commited to the sport with open arms! Completing every course known to man at Getaway and a full season in 2003 Monday and Friday twilights as well as every offshore race made him climb up the sailing ladder pretty quickly. Now an instructor at Getaway we understand he now get's paid to sail with the big boys....Thanks for all your support brother G!

Geoff Hargraves - Sydney
I would like to extend my thanks to you, your staff and your skippers I have sailed with this last year James, Pittwater to Coffs, and Chis Syd-Gold Coast, Gosford - Lord Howe, Sydney to Hobart, and Bird island and twilights, and yourself for Flinders and the Twilights and other courses. I have enjoyed the year immensly and have seen my sailing skills improve under your teams guidence. Thanks for that. My goal when I was looking for a school was to get my self to a level so that I could participate in a Hobart race (something I have wanted to do for 40+ years), and although our boat didn't make it, our team handled the 60+ knots and the seas safely, and I really enjoyed the helming experience. I will always remember your words of encouragement on the Flinders race when I hesitated when offered the helm, " If you don't want to have a go what are you doing out here?" Precisely. Thanks, I remembered that at 60 knots as I took the helm. Getaway has given me much, skills as mentioned and a great group of new friends. These people are the salt of the earth, people who like a good time but there is no bull when someone needs a hand. I have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone considering taking up this sport, as you have good boats, good people and the right skills. This year my holidays will be taken with the ARC race across the Atlantic, with friends met through Getaway of course

Phil Scanlon - Man Of The Match - Mooloolabah Race
A good friend of mine had been racing offshore with Getaway, and as my girlfriend and I were looking to get into sailing I gave Andy a call. We signed up to do an introduction sail, and had a great time out on the water. Everything was explained and we all had a good opportunity to try out all the different parts of the boat. A week later we were doing our Competent Crew and dreaming of all the adventures we would be having once qualified. Since then we've both had an awesome time sailing and every adventure has taught us new skills. Getaway Sailing even managed to organise a week offshore cruise for my 30th. The highlight of the summer was bringing back a VO60 from Hobart. Crossing the Bass Straight in the Formula-1 machine of sailing was certainly an memory that will last a lifetime. Now seriously hooked, we're signed up to do all the offshore races this year, and will be spending our hours in the classroom learning all we can about radio's, first aid and working towards our yachting qualifications. What's really great about Getaway is that you can learn at your own pace, and do as little or as much sailing as you like. Andy and his team of instructors really know how to make sure everyone learns on each outing. A word of warning to those about to start sailing with Getaway - It's seriously addictive stuff!

Quiddity , Hobart Campaign 2002 Jo and Peter Hoving
We just wanted to thank the Getaway Sailing Team in Sydney for helping us prepare for this years Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. We had a ball learning all the safety courses and successfully completed the Sea Survival,Radio and Marine First Aid Courses at Getaway. Great teaching and friendly staff....good coffee too! We had a successful Hobart Race thanks to Andy and his team James, Ty, Adrienne and Clare. We are now going, continueing on our round the world voyage and hope to see you all soon in Holland! Thanks. Peter and Jo, Quiddity, Grand Soleil 43.

I could never have imagined how an innocent trip to the Sydney Boat Show in 2002 would find me in a Category 2 off shore race, at night, with gusts up to 42 knots and swell of 3m flying a spinnaker – until it blew! Having completed Competent Crew, Spinnaker and Sea Safety courses and enjoyed many a Friday twilight and Staurday Winter Series – there I was! Whoever wonders about the emotions off shore sailing in “interesting” conditions should give it a go. The first night of the Sydney Gold Coast race 2003, found us in those exact conditions and in truth I was not enjoying it – to the extent that I was seriously thinking Getaway would have my wet weather gear as second hand items for their web site at the end of the race. After the wind died down and the sun appeared, a whole different experience started – real team work in fine tuning a Sydney 38 ahead of 20 of the fleet! Seeing the strip of the Gold Coast in the fading light of day 3 was welcome – but it’s not over until you get there, and that meant 3 more hours in varying winds – and then we were there! Did someone say hotel? Let’s get to the bar instead …. and stay ….. a Sydney 38 gets “cosy” when there are 9 sleeping down below! After a day or so of topping up the hydration levels – with beer and wine – Saturday night seemed less “terrifying”. By the time I returned to Sydney, the whole experience had taken on a rosy glow and I am now eagerly looking forward to racing to Flinders Island with the same crew in November – bring on the wind – but leave it at 30 knots please! My lasting thoughts of offshore racing are linking it to the experience of childbirth many people talk about:It can be hell on earth at the time but give it a week and you’re planning the next!!

Murray Spence, Manager, Alfa Romeo
"We all felt the Marine First Aid course was a great help in preparing SHOCKWAVE for medical emergencies at sea. The course goes in to depth on what you really need to know when you are out there at sea. It's a practical, hands on course with a marine perspective that we would encourage all sailors to get involved in". Murray Spence, Manager Team Shockwave - Alfa Romeo.

Karin & Christian - Swiss -Hobart to Sydney Offshore Trip 03
Hobart to Sydney – a true sailing adventure We started the new year 2003 with a fantastic sailing adventure! On January the first, we flew to Hobart to take the 60 feet yacht "formulaonesailing.com" – previously known as "Eureka II" – back to Sydney with a crew of 14, skippered by Getaway's Principal Ty Oxley. The yacht competed in the legendary Sydney to Hobart race. Already leaving Hobart was exciting, watching part of the Sydney to Hobart fleet racing. After passing the Tasmanian Light we stopped overnight in Port Arthur, where we did the frightening ghost tour... Arriving in Wineglass Bay, you just get the immpression, that you are anchoring in a Caribbean bay. For just 20 bucks and a few beers, we got five lobsters from a fisherman – Being on watchtime – 4 hours on/off during the day and 3 hours on/off during the day – using the stars to navigate, watch the sunset on portside and a few hours later sunrise on starboard, arriving back in Sydney early evening on January 8th – just on time to be in before a heavy storm with up to 42 knots of wind came up. A 783nm adventure trip for two Swiss sailors - we'll never forget! Karin & Christian

Peter Hoving - Quiddity, Holland
A special thanks to Andrew and the Getaway Team for all the help getting our boat ready for this years big race. The storage, the hands, the help and the support in getting our IMS certificates redone 3 times!! Your office was our home. Thanks!! Peter

Greg Antipas - Sydney
Thanks the Getaway Team and to Andrew for getting me in to this great sport. I have been sailing with Andy for almost 5 years on and off now. I started with a small interest in the wind, sea and sun and it has turned to a great passion of mine. I have completed in many offshore races, courses and now in my first offshore delivery. It was on the old Djuice , Seriously 10 from Hamilton Island to Sydney. We hit over 20 knots of speed and covered 1,100 miles in just 4 days sailing. Awesome.Just awesome. I learnt the art of steering down wind in a good blow on one of the worlds fastest boats, the Volvo 60. Thanks for the ride and for the support over the years!

John Garbut - Sydney
2 short years since an innocent Sunday afternoon at Sydney Boat Show - yes Andy it was only 2002 - what a change sailing has made to my life! Getaway Sailing have equipped me with many skills through a logical route of courses - Intro Sailing, Comp Crew, Spinnaker, Sea Safety and most recently Helming. Last Year was my first introduction to true offshore - Southport, with 42kn and 3m swells - "absolutely perilous"! Did I return.....yes! The Ocean Point Score series - feeders for Hobart - brought even higher winds on a COLD October day, but instead of "perilous" it was more like "bring it on!".
This year Mooloolaba was the challenge - light and changeable winds are quite different than a Southerly behind you! As for harbour sailing - you never can predict it! One Winter day can be 5kn of wind, another can blow up to 40kn - challenging!
So why sailing? the absolute ultimate work switch off - you can think of nothing but sailing when you sail, especially with the friendly encouragement of Andy and of course the friends you meet through Getaway!
Thinking about trying sailing? As Nike says, don't think about doing it - Just Do It..............with Getaway of course!

Phil Tomkins - Melbourne
Phil came to us, keen as mustard! Wide eyed and opend to it all.In a very short period of time Phil has acheived great results. Racing in his first offshore race to Mooloolaba in 2004 having completed Sea Safety and a number of other key courses. Phil is now a regular on Sydney Harbour sailing with Gondwana and Eleni when he can. "I'm stoked with sailing. The boys at Getaway have looked after me well. Not sure about most of the crew though. Far to many late nights and blurry days! Thanks Getaway for all the fun. See you for the Southport Race!"

Lynne Ainsworth - Gondwana Crew - Sydney
As someone who enjoys a challenge and adventure, I decided to learn to sail about 2 and a half years ago and was recommended to Getaway by a friend - it was the best recommendation I could have received.I started out with a Competent Crew Course and followed this with a Spinnaker Course and from there it was all smooth sailing! I now race on the Harbour every weekend and at the end of last year was introduced to off-shore racing by Getaway. I have competed in Sydney to Coffs Harbour, Sydney to Mooloolaba and two OPS races with Getaway, and have plans to compete in further races throughout the year.I have continued doing courses with Getaway including Navigation,Sea Safety & Survival, Marine Radio Operator and Marine First Aid all of which have provided invaluable knowledge and skills to assist me with my development as a sailor. The instructors are always helpful and have a vast knowledge of sailing and I have learnt an enormous amount during the time I have been a student at Getaway, I've also gained many new friends, had many new experiences and also recommended my friends to Getaway.

Elise Payne - Melbourne
Sailing is one of those sports that you can choose to hit the high seas by "going solo" if you wish but I personally could think of no better way than partaking in this sport with the friends that I have met through Getaway. Since completing both courses at Getaway Sailing School - Introduction to Sailing and the Competent Crew Sailing Course I have not only met a vast array of people, some of whom have become great friends and some of whom I have experienced shall we say, "interesting" moments with but I have actually acquired a sound understanding of what is involved in sailing and racing a yacht competently. Sailing is all about being social and having fun (yet serious at times) but most of all the best part for me anyway has been learning something new that challenges my every move. If you're looking to either "brush up" on your sailing skills or simply a novice (like I was but not anymore - move over Jesse Martin!!) who just wants to have a little fun and get amongst it then there is "No better way than Getaway" - I would highly recommend giving the crew at Getaway a call and see what they have to say - You've nothing to lose but a whole lot to gain!!

Chris Lewis - ( Lewy ) Singapore
Insisting on sailing with us back in Aug 2003 on a rainy Saturday afternoon, this man has never stopped feeding his passion for the sport. Chris has since completed a number of offshore races, one of which he came in handy since he was one of only a few crew to stand his watch in the 45 knot southerly! as well as fastracking Sea Safety Survival and First Aid with us. Chris's passion and love of the ocean is second to none. He manages to sail with us frequently squeezing us in around his hectic work schedule. By day a lawyer, by night a mad yankie sailor with a need for boat speed. Chris and close friend Richard Killip, are now setting their sights on Sydney to Hobart 2004. Sailing in style with Getaway. Thanks for your support guys!

Katie and Karot - Balmain , Sydney
We hired a 42 footer from Getaway in Oct last year after completing Comp Crew and had a ball. Thanks for all the fun and games out at sea. The Whales were great, the crew was perfect and we all learnt heaps!

Rhonda Morely - Randwick , Sydney
Another great offshore weekend in May 2004! This woman learnt to sail in the day and night ..helming with out instuments and with total confidence! Well done Rhonda! Welcome to the world of offshore sailing!

Cheryl Rogers , Darling Point , Sydney
Cheryl decided to take up sailing to broaden her social circle in Sydney and take advantage of the great harbour and sunshine that we Sydneysiders enjoy. Now 2 years in to the sport, and offshore trips and numerous classes under her belt, she decided to date the skipper of the business!! Andrew and Cheryl got married in August, 2004. C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to them and to think it all started at the CYCA sailing on a Wednesday Twilight!

Keir Enderby - Marine First Aid Course -
I did the Senior First Aid course last year for the 2001 Hobart, and consider myself pretty competent now at treating snake bite, road accident trauma and work place injury. St John's were terrific by the way, however as you say, the first and most important thing the Senior First Aid course recommends is a call to 000. This could be quite irrelevant 40 miles off shore. Your First Aid course sounds the go. Keep up the good work boys!

Macca - Lord Howe 2006 - The Triple
  Hi Folks,

Wow!!! How often would this happen??? People will sail a lifetime without experiencing “one” of these achievements. I’m part of a team that has all three!!! That’s F@&$ing amazing.(send the shirts back for more embroidery).
I would like to mention & thank a few people! It might be bit long winded, but not a long as Cam’s pirate jokes!
Frenchy – For your wit! And at each watch change, your spirits regardless of the time. “Good Morning”
Seal Clubber – for not throwing up when I took you to the dunny – hope you back on your feet!
Bucko – For sharing so much knowledge & your bottomless bag of jokes – crack me up!
Campbell – Again for sharing your knowledge, your positive attitude & your cooking. (notice I didn’t mention jokes)
Robyn – What would you be thinking now? If you didn’t do it! Well done!
Sammie - F@&k – you can steer!! And you laugh a lot Bruce –For your efforts & being a team player Steve - Always good for a chat!

Finally – “Gold Dog” – F@#K you can snore!!
Your interaction with you key crew members, namely Bucko & Campbell was such a source of knowledge.
It was great to see in many cases, various opinions on how things work or don’t work! Outside of our achievements & meeting such a great group of people the knowledge gained was a highlight for me. I have sailed with a few people who have half the knowledge you guys do & won’t share it! Mainly because there head is buried in their ass!

It’s a credit to you & your team @ Getaway – Thank you for the opportunity!!

I have attached a video & some pics!(ZIP FILE)Can't wait to see your photo's
Thanks for the experience
Will keep in touch.
Macca

Firstly let me thank you and your excellnt crew for such a wonderful trip. that journey was one of the best things that I have done. Both Goldy and James were superb in their professionism, their knowledge and leadership. We had a great crew with experience from Geoff, Bill, Peter and Des, but your top guys certainly made the whole experience so enjoyable. You have a wonderful team there.

Nick Athenaos - Owner, Kioni First 47.7
I have had the pleasure of working with Andy and the Getaway team for a year now . He has driven good revenue towards my boat and looked after her as my own. He upgraded the boat from Cat 7 to full on Cat 1 as well as new sails and gear for the boat. Highly recommended as a great sailor and solid businessman.

Dee Caffai - BT Challenge Skipper. 2004/5
Andrew and his team helped us prepare and organise our Volvo 60 campaign 2003 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. A big thanks to Getaway Sailing who put in the hours, day and night, to co-ordinate Cat 1 inspections, crew training, daily food, accom arrangements in Hobart and Sydney and who helped us finish the race with smiles on our faces. Tim Colclough - Potts Point, Sydney . June 2004
I jumped on board Obsession, one of Getaway’s Sydney 38’s back in Jan 03 and from that moment on I never looked back. Since then I have completed Comp Crew, Sea Survival and Performance Trim Classes as well as competed in every offshore race on the east coast in 2003. That included sailing in a 50 knots southerly blow to Mooloolaba in March! I also nearly bought Getaway out of MUSTO stock with a full set of gear, boots, safety stuff and some fun toys. I now sail most weekends on other Sydney 38’s in Sydney Harbour and have recently competed in the Sydney 38 National Championships on board NO OPTIONS. I also completed the 2004 Mooloolaba Race on the Maxi Yacht Broomstick which was a huge step up from just a year ago. I have set my sights on crossing the Atlantic in 2005 with some mates I met through Getaway. A special thanks to Andy and the team at Getaway for giving me the help to get in to this great sport.

Peter Fray - Fine Line USA, Hobart 2004
I wanted to take a minute and thank you for your efforts with Team Filneline USA for the Sydney to Hobart . I thought the boat ended up in great shape and everything was well handeled on you end. I would recommend you anytime.
I also wanted to comment on your Safety at Sea course. I thought this was excellent and was very glad I attended. It really gave me the confidence , to have a plan should I ever end up in need of it. It really was a truelly valueable experience. Thanks Again Andy and team. Peter Fray 1125 S. Home Oak Park, Il 60304. USA

Bernie B - London Oct 2004
Many thanks for an absolutely great time on the LHI race last week. I had an absolute blast and loved every minute of it. All the guys and girls were great and it was a pleasure to sail with such a great crew.
As ever you organised a great trip on a well sorted boat, with a great skipper. Your personal enthusiasm, fun and warmth made it even more special.
You personally made me feel very welcome and it felt like I was sailing with the same bunch of mates I've got in the UK.

Richard Killip - Singapore Oct 2004
Thanks for a top trip. Well organised, professional and we kicked some ass with a first place on the Team Event and fourth overall. Lord Howe is a special place and we have to go back soon. Thanks for a top effort on great boat prep and training. Rich.

John Larson - FINE LINE - USA Hobart 2004
Thanks so much for the Sydney to Hobart race experience. It was a great challenge, a lot of fun and has definitely wetted my appetite for more endurance racing. I'm also grateful for the extra time that Getaway provided. You, Chris, Johno... the whole group spent a lot of time making sure that we (and the boat) were prepared, and I know that the crew really appreciated it. Please thank Nick for the use of his boat as well, and for being so helpful in making sure it was properly equipped. If you are ever in need of a testimonial as to the thoroughness of Getaway or the value of the Survival course, just drop me a line.

Colin Worsley - Sydney, June 2003
"Thanks to everyone at Getaway for helping me to realise a lifetime's ambition. The courses have been excellent and the offshore trips/races inspirational.Best of all I've made some great friends along the way, some of whom I hope to sail to Hobart with in December. I can't believe it's less than a year since I did the intro sail." (voted Man of the Match Gold Coast Race 2003)

Ralf Haft - Germany. August 2002
I had not been offshore for quite a long time and just refreshed my sailing skills with a Comp Crew Course. Thanks to Getaway for making my trip so much fun. I got to drive the boat, trim sails, do navigation work and learnt a lot of different things about preparing a boat for offshore sailing. We sailed from Coffs Harbour to Sydney with only 4 crew so there was lots of work to do....I loved it. Thanks Getaway.

Alex Thompson - Vendee Globe Skipper - HUGO BOSS
Getaway has had the pleasure of working with Alex on the 2002 Sydney to Hobart Race. Alex has a passion for ocean racing that saw him compete in the toughest ocean race in the world, The Vendee Globe, single handed, non stop, round the world race. We welcome him and his HUGO BOSS team to Sydney this summer for this years Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race. We are proud to be assisting his team in its quest to win this years race.

Dawn Routledge - Mossman, Sydney
After Intro sail and Comp Crew courses with Getaway Sailing back in April 2003 it was too late... I was hooked. It was great fun, good way to meet people and a great way to see the harbour. I raced with the Getaway crew and others on weekends over the winter, spent summer evenings out on the water in the twilights. In no time at all (and only after doing sea survival training) I was bringing a VO60 back from Hobart just a few months after I had started sailing. Thanks to all at Getaway for a great year on the water and bring on the Winter Series.

Competing in the 2001 Sydney/Hobart has been the adventure of a life time. The sailing was fantastic and the people so friendly and welcoming, thanks to everybody at GETAWAY who made my trip so memorable. See you all again soon I will spread the word in the UK that you guys are the best. You are all DEAD KEEN SAILORS!!

Lend Lease Corp Sailing
Annual Venue Management Security Services/Lend Lease Challenge Cup Day If the weather was anything to go by, we were in for a great days sailing. The sun was beaming down on our beautiful harbour and the beer was just beginning to flow. We had three boats competing this year .I had the pleasure to be on Obsession, a Sydney 38, skippered by Chris Townsend. Bit of a character, but he knew his stuff, we were in good hands. There were those on board up for the challenge and those who just wanted to sit down and soak up the sun and the sights. And that’s what’s so great about this type of day, you can participate in the race as much as you want or as little. Thoroughly recommend getaway-sailing to anyone for a great corporate/ social day.   Just a short note of thanks to Andy and the team for looking after me on my trip to Sydney. The Hobart race was better than expected and the support, professionalism of the boat we hired was just spot on. Thanks again and hope to see you in 2004. Paul

Georgina Wilson - Hong Kong, Sept 2002
Andy thanks so much for arranging our fun and games on Sydney Harbour in Dec. We had a ball and you guys really made it happen for us. Although we did not come home with any silver wear, (we will make sure next time we have you on board to help us!) we all had a ball. Thanks so much. Here is a shot of us back in HK, not quite a Sydney 38 but it gets us on the water.... Georgey!

Gebbi Heruc - Sydney , Comp Crew Graduate July 2002
I thought it was going to be too cold to learn how to sail in winter. But after my Intro Course in April, the team at Getaway convinced me to take advantage of the winter special price for Comp Crew. It was perfect, a great course, professional teaching. Now I have just completed my first offshore adventure in August...I am hooked. Thanks for getting me going..thanks for great teaching and all the special tips ! Gabbi
